On 10 July Jakub Skiba, the president of Poland’s Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), the national state-run defence-industrial consortium, and Stefan Volantii, the vice president of the Helicopter Division of Leonardo, signed a letter of intent (LOI) to co-operate on development of the Italian firm’s AW249 attack helicopter. The document, while creating the opportunity for Polish industry to have a role in a new aircraft programme, is being criticised as potentially eliminating any chances for Poland to acquire the Boeing AH-64E Apache for its own armed forces requirements.
