An Afghan Air Force (AAF) helicopter that made an emergency landing in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand Province on 13 May was intentionally destroyed by the service in an airstrike shortly after the crew was rescued, the Ministry of Defense in Kabul has announced.

The platform came down in the village of Yakhchal, Nahri Saraj District, due to technical issues, said the ministry, adding that the crew members were safely transferred to Shorab Air Base. While the MoD did not identify the platform, a US Army source told Jane’s that it was a Mil Mi-17 ‘Hip’ assault/utility helicopter.
