The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded BAE Systems a GBP1.5 billion (USD2 billion) contract to deliver the seventh and last Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, named Agincourt, BAE Systems announced on 14 May. The announcement was made by UK Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson during a visit to BAE Systems' submarine building site in Barrow-in-Furness, where he also said a GBP900 million contract had been awarded to the company for the Dreadnought ballistic nuclear missile submarine programme.
Williamson was visiting Barrow to formally open BAE Systems' new Central Yard Facility, where some phases of the production of the Dreadnought-class submarines will take place.
