The US Navy (USN) will re-establish the 2nd Fleet to better handle adversaries in the Atlantic, Admiral John Richardson, the chief of naval operations, said.

“Our National Defence Strategy makes clear that we’re back in an era of great power competition as the security environment continues to grow more challenging and complex,” Adm Richardson said on 4 May during a ceremony marking Admiral Phil Davidson’s change of command with Admiral Chris Grady as the head of US Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia.

The National Defence Strategy identifies “great power” competitors such as China and – particularly in the Atlantic – Russia as key challenges.
