South Korean and US forces have stepped up North Korea-related reconnaissance operations amid growing speculation that the communist country could test a long-range ballistic missile in the near future, the Yonhap news agency quoted a military source in Seoul as saying on 8 October.

US Forces Korea has increased the operations conducted by the U-2S high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, while South Korea has stepped up the surveillance missions flown by its RC-800 (believed to be the country's designation for the Hawker 800SIG aircraft) and RF-16 reconnaissance aircraft as well as by its E-737 airborne early warning and control aircraft, and P-3C maritime patrol aircraft, said the unnamed official.
