Three US army special forces troops and five Nigerien soldiers were killed on 4 October while on joint patrol in Niger’s western Tillaberi region, near the Malian border.
Another two US soldiers were wounded when the patrol was ambushed in the village of Tongo Tongo by assailants coming from Mali. These are the first US hostile-fire casualties in Niger, where the US military is training local troops. As yet, there has been no claim of responsibility. The United States has 800 troops in Niger and is completing construction of a drone facility in the central town of Agadez, which will take over from the current surveillance operation in Mali piloted from Niamey.
